Il Tempio di Santa Maria della Consolazione sorge ai piedi del colle di Todi. La chiesa fu costruita fra il 1508 d.C. ed il 1607 d.C. sul luogo di alcune guarigioni miracolose avvenute presso un edicola dove erano dipinte le immagini della Vergine col Bambino e Santa Caterina di Alessandria.

La tradizione vuole che un operaio privo della vista da un occhio, forse un certo Iole di Cecco, eseguendo l’ordine del comune di liberare dai rovi la zona presso le porte di Santa Maria e di San Giorgio avesse ripulito dalla polvere il volto dipinto della Vergine Maria con il proprio fazzoletto. In seguito, asciugandosi il volto e gli occhi con quello stesso fazzoletto avrebbe riacquistato miracolosamente la vista.

Il tempio della consolazione è uno dei più alti esempi di arte rinascimentale presenti in Umbria. Il progetto dell’impianto a croce greca, caratterizzato da cinque cupole, una centrale ed una per ogni abside della pianta del tempio, dovrebbe essere opera della scuola del Bramante, anche se alcuni lo vogliono frutto dell’opera di Cola di Caprarola ed altri di Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane. Tuttavia sembra certo che la direzione dei lavori sia stata affidata proprio a quest’ultimo che portò a compimento un tempio dalle forme di grande armonia alto circa 70 metri al culmine della lanterna che capeggia la cupola centrale.
L’interno del Tempio di Santa Maria della Consolazione, caratterizzato dall’ariosità e dalla luminosità degli spazi tipiche del Rinascimento, ospita le statue di Papa Martino di Todi, quelle dei dodici apostoli e nell’abside nord presso l’altare barocco un’immagine della Vergine con il Bambino che viene ritenuta ancora miracolosa. La devozione degli abitanti di Todi per la Vergine e per il tempio che la città volle dedicarle è tale che per porre rimedio a quello che da più parti veniva ritenuto un vero scempio architettonico, ovvero la costruzione di una sacrestia nel 1613 appoggiata sul lato nord del tempio, tutta la cittadinanza insorse ottenendone infine l’abbattimento nel 1862 d.C.
