Il Museo Nazionale del Ducato di Spoleto è collocato nel suggestivo contesto della Rocca Albornoz, monumento dei più significativi del territorio spoletino e umbro.
Il museo è stato inaugurato nel 2007, basandosi su un progetto originario del 1982 che intendeva presporre un luogo dedicato alla conservazione e valorizzazione della storia e dell’arte del Ducato. Il Ducato di Spoleto ha origine dalla presenza longobarda in Italia e in questo territorio nello specifico: la popolazione germanica dei longobardi discese infatti lungo la penisola italiana nel VI secolo dC, scontrandosi con le truppe romane e rompendo l’unità politica dell’impero, stanziandosi in alcune aree del centro Italia.
Il Percorso Museale
Il museo si articola in quindici sale disposte negli spazi del Cortile d’Onore, sia a livello del pianterreno che del primo piano secondo una suddivisione per temi:
- le prime comunità cristiane nel contesto territoriale, sono qui conservati reperti provenienti soprattutto dagli edifici di culto e funerari del territorio;
- il monachesimo, fenomeno approfondito nello specifico;
- il Ducato longobardo di Spoleto;
- il periodo carolingio-ottoniano;
- il periodo dall’impero al papato;
- l’età comunale e il Quattrocento, il percorso termina con sculture e pitture del periodo citato, a documentare la grande fioritura artistica vissuta dalla città.
Nel suo complesso dunque la raccolta museale ripercorre la storia locale dal IV secolo dC fino a giungere al XV secolo.
L’intento è quello di far conoscere la complessità degli eventi storici del ducato e la sua vivacità culturale, con pannelli illustrativi che completano l’itinerario approfondendo le funzioni storiche di ogni ambiente.
L’allestimento del museo nella Rocca ha permesso inoltre di recuperare e valorizzare nuovamente gli ambienti stessi dell’imponente costruzione, tornata al suo fascino originario dopo una lunga decadenza dovuta al suo utilizzo come carcere. L’ambiente e la collocazione della Rocca arricchiscono il percorso, tra le imponenti sale e i panorami suggestivi che si aprono all’esterno.

L’ingresso al Museo Nazionale del Ducato di Spoleto è situato in Piazza Campello, dove si accede alla Rocca.
Il Museo è visitabile tutti i giorni dal Martedì alla Domenica, con i seguenti orari:
Orario Estivo: dalle 9:30 alle 19:30 (il lunedì solo mattina dalle 9:30 alle 13:30)
Orario Invernale: dalle 9:30 alle 18:00 (lunedì chiuso)
L’ultimo ingresso è previsto 45 minuti prima dell’orario di chiusura.
Il biglietto d’ingresso ha un costo di € 7,50 con riduzione a € 3,75 per ragazzi dai 18 ai 25 anni e ingresso gratuito sotto ai 18 anni. Inoltre, ogni prima domenica del mese l’ingresso è gratuito per tutti i visitatori.
