Nel delizioso borgo umbro di Città della Pieve viene organizzata ogni estate una interessante e coinvolgente manifestazione storica conosciuta con il nome di “Palio dei Terzieri”, quest’anno previsto dal 12 al 25 Agosto 2019
Il tradizionale evento è strettamente legato alle radici storiche locali, rievoca infatti eventi che caratterizzavano il borgo tra il 1400 ed il 1500, raccontando ancora oggi la cultura ed i costumi del Medioevo.
Le antiche origini del Palio dei Terzieri
La manifestazione si presenta come la rievocazione storica di una tradizione medievale orami perduta, la celebre “Corsa del Toro”, una sorta di corrida che avveniva però tra le vie del paese e non in un’arena e durante la quale gli uomini che vi partecipavano fronteggiavano il toro con delle lance.
Oggi l’evento ha perso la sua connotazione antica di sfida con gli animali e della caccia al toro, poiché mira essenzialmente a rievocare la cultura e le tradizioni del Medioevo e del Rinascimento umbro. La caccia è stata sostituita con una competizione tra i rappresentanti dei terzieri, che si sfidano al tiro con l’arco colpendo delle sagome fissate su pedane mobili con le sembianze di tori.
Il Palio dei Terzieri Oggi
Nelle giornate di festa del Palio si assiste a numerosi spettacoli e manifestazioni di sicuro interesse storico e culturale, con la ricostruzione tra le vie del centro storico delle antiche botteghe del XIV secolo, musiche e balli lungo le vie del paese e le immancabili taverne tipiche.
Il Palio vero e proprio è preceduto da un Corteo in abiti d’epoca al quale partecipano oltre 800 figuranti, cui prendono parte antiche le personalità politiche: cavalieri, notabili, dame, popolani ma anche mangiafuoco e giocolieri attraversano le vie principali del centro storico, sfilando tra visitatori e curiosi.
Poi l’attenzione si concentra, naturalmente, sul Palio: una gara di abilità al tiro con l’arco in cui i rappresentanti dei terzieri dovranno centrare delle sagome a forma di toro, elemento che ricongiunge l’evento alla tradizione medievale e che si svolge in tre fasi, al termine delle quali il tiratore che avrà ottenuto il migliore risultato riporterà la vittoria. Il vincitore riporterà dunque il Palio, simboleggiato da un drappo di stoffa dipinto, al suo Terziere.

Città della Pieve is a lovely village in Umbria , and every year , is organized an interesting historical event , known as the ” Terzieri ” traditional event which brings its origins between 1400 and 1500, which still tells today culture and customs of the Middle Ages.
The event , which is able to obtain critical acclaim and attracted the attention of a large number of tourists , comes as the reenactment of a medieval tradition , the famous ” Running of the Bull ” , a kind of bullfight that took place , however, between the streets of the town and not in an arena and during which the men who took part faced the bull with spears .
Today the event has lost this ancient connotation of the bull hunt and primarily aims to evoke the culture and traditions of the Middle Ages and the Umbrian Renaissance. On days of celebration in fact we are seeing a number of shows and demonstrations of safe historical and cultural interest, with the reconstruction, the streets of the historic center of the old workshops of the fourteenth century, music and dancing in the streets of the country.
The Palio itself is preceded by a parade in period costumes, attended by over 700 people and take part in the ancient political personalities most important in the territory, later then the focus is of course on the Palio, this consists of a contest of skill at archery, representatives of terzieri will hit Moulds shaped, bull, an element that joins the event to the medieval tradition, takes place in three stages, after which the shooter that obtains the best result, will bring victory, symbolized by a drape of fabric painting, his Terziere.

Città della Pieve (PG) is eagerly awaiting his 2012 Palio dei Terzieri, from August 8th to 19th, 2012.
The term Terzieri indicate those towns, many of them are in Umbria as Trevi, Narni and Spello, divided into three districts. The subdivision, of the Middle Ages, makes Città della Pieve seem, from the urban point of view, an eagle: the head corresponds to the Terziere Castello (Castle) or Classe dei Cavalieri (Class of the Knights); the belly the Terziere Borgo Dentro; the wing-tail the Terziere Casalino or Class of the Pedestrians. And the Terzieri were well defined from the point of view of the rank, too, as represented three distinct social classes. In fact, the Terziere Castello was composed by members of the aristocracy, Borgo Dentro the bourgeoisie and the peasants of the Terziere Casalino.
The day of the Lancio della Sfida (Launch of the Challenge), August 15th, 2012 starting at 17:30 at Piazza Plebiscito, the Pallium is returned from the winner Terziere of the last edition, the Casalino (it was also in 2010), in the hands of the Podestà (similar to a modern Mayor) of Castel della Pieve. Up to August 19th will be kept in town, from where it will be released only on the day of the Caccia del Toro (Hunt of the Bull), a challenge in the art of archery, to appear in the grand historical procession preceded by the gonfalon of the town.
The culmination of the 12-day celebration is, indeed, August 19th, 2012. From 17:00 and from Piazza del Plebiscito starts the Corteo Storico, with over 800 participants. Follow it the Maestro di Scena (Stage Director), the Portagonfalone (Flag-Ship), the Armati del Comune (Armed Municipality), the Giudici di Campo (Back Judges) and an allegorical float, by Classical inspiration. Whole works among jugglings, skill games and Renaissance music. The parade arrives at the Campo de li Giochi, the Campo di Santa Lucia, the ground for the Caccia del Toro.
Inspired by the ancient Sienese “Cacce” (Hunts: Città della Pieve, rebellious to the Papal States for centuries, was very in tune with Siena, ed), the Palio is a challenge of archery. Each Terziere has 3 participants, each with 3 arrows. The targets to center are three mobile targets with the appearance of a Chianina bull, mounted on a carousel. Every target has the colors of the corresponding Terziere. 3 are also the throwing rounds. Small particular: at each change of round increases the speed of the targets, which makes them even more difficult. Who will do the most points, wins. The prize, the Pallium, is a beautiful painted tapestry, by the Pievese master Antonio Marroni.
Throughout the duration of the Palio there will be moments of drama, music, juggling but, above all, wiil be in function the characteristics Taverne of the Terzieri, where you will can taste specialties of the traditional Umbrian – Tuscan cuisine.
