Eretta in età augustea, Porta Venere è stata studiata e disegnata, per primo, dall’architetto bolognese Sebastiano Serlio nel 1540 e, nel secolo XVII, da storici locali che la misero in stretta relazione con i resti di un tempio dedicato a Venere, scoperti presso la villa Fidelia, fuori la cerchia delle mura urbane di Spello.

Le due Torri di Properzio a pianta dodecagonale che affiancano la porta e che un’antica tradizione ha legato al nome del poeta latino sono state ritenute di epoca medievale. Vi è una leggenda che identifica la torre a monte della porta con il luogo della prigione di Orlando.
Ciò che nobilita il complesso è sicuramente la porta urbica dedicata a Venere: realizzata in travertino bianco essa testimonia un glorioso passato spellano che segnò l’inizio della Splendidissima Colonia Julia. Realizzata tipologicamente a tre fornici è ornata da lesene di ordine dorico, interposte fra un arco e l’altro. Nella parte superiore corre una trabeazione per tutta la lunghezza della porta, motivo unificatore nel segno di una armonia compositiva.
È fornita anche di un cavaedium, edificio di fortificazione che prevede una doppia porta. Tutta l’area su cui oggi insiste il complesso era un tempo ricca di altre edificazioni i cui resti sono oggi visibili nelle cantine delle abitazioni che si snodano su tutta via Torri di Properzio.

Torri di Properzio, the two dodecagonal towers that flank the door Porta Venere are linked by an old tradition with the name of the Latin poet Properzio. There is also a Middle Ages legend that identifies the tower upstream of the door with the location of the prison of Orlando.
What ennobles the complex is definitely the city gate dedicated to Venus made of white travertine stripping which testifies to a glorious past that marked the beginning of Splendidissima Colonia Julia. Made typologically three arches is decorated with pilasters of the Doric order, interposed between an arc and the other. In the upper part a trabeation for the entire length of the door, in the sign of a unifying reason compositional harmony .
It also comes with a cavaedium , building of fortifications which includes a double door . The whole area on which now emphasizes the complex was once full of other buildings whose remains are still visible in the cellars of the houses that run on the entire street Torri di Properzio.
